Mission Hospital was recently recognized by the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP®) for achieving meritorious outcomes for surgical patient care in 2014.
ACS NSQIP has recognized 52 of 517 hospitals participating in the adult program; participating hospitals are required to track the outcomes of inpatient and outpatient surgical procedures and then analyze their results. Only one other hospital in North Carolina was among the 52. These results will direct patient safety initiatives within the hospital and impact the quality of surgical care.
“Mission Hospital recently enrolled in ACS NSQIP to capitalize on a nationally recognized program that we felt could assist us in measuring and continuously improving the quality of surgical care we provide our patients,” said Trent Ibbotson, Vice President, Surgical Services, Mission Hospital. “This program affords us the opportunity to learn from our colleagues throughout the country as we aspire to achieve our BIG(GER) Aim: to get each patient to their desired outcome, without harm, without waste, and with an exceptional patient and family experience. We are honored to receive the meritorious distinction and congratulate the other 51 institutions on their achievement as well.”
The ACS NSQIP recognition program commends a select group of hospitals for achieving a meritorious composite score. That composite score was determined through a weighted formula combining eight outcomes. The outcome performances related to patient management were in the following eight clinical areas:
Mortality
Cardiac: cardiac arrest and myocardial infarction
Pneumonia
Unplanned Intubation
Ventilator > 48 hours
Renal Failure
SSI: Surgical Site Infection: superficial incisional SSI, deep incisional SSI and organ/space SSI
UTI: Urinary Tract Infection
The 52 meritorious hospitals represented approximately 10 percent of the hospitals evaluated in the semiannual report.
ACS NSQIP is the only nationally validated quality improvement program that measures and enhances the care of surgical patients.
