Near-record high temps predicted for this weekend

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas somewhere, but it’s certainly not in the mountains this weekend. Near record temperatures are predicted for western North Carolina today (Saturday, December 12) and Sunday, Dec. 13, according to the National Weather Service.

As dense early morning fog dissipates, forcasters predict that “temps should soar,” reaching around 70 degrees by this afternoon. However, the National Weather Service says today’s highs will remain “a touch below record maxes” of 74 degrees for December 12, set in 1971.

Expect more of the same for most of the day on Sunday, with a high of around 70 degrees again and increasing cloudiness as the day goes on. While clouds are expected to mix in with sun throughout the weekend, WNC should stay dry and mild through Sunday afternoon.

So get out there and enjoy it while it lasts! A cold front will begin pushing its way east from Tennessee in the early evening on Sunday, combining with moisture moving North out of Florida. According to Weather Underground, occasional showers will develop over Sunday evening, with a sixty percent chance of rain by midnight.

Clouds and rain will continue for the Monday morning commute, with high winds and thunderstorms possible, says NWS.
