North Asheville Residents Form “Citizens for Responsible Land Use”

Focused on promoting sustainable land use policies in North Asheville neighborhoods

Asheville, NC. – May 20, 2016 – Over 150 residents of North Asheville neighborhoods have joined together to form Citizens for Responsible Land Use (CRLU), an organization focused on promoting sustainable land use policies in undeveloped steep slope areas of Killian and Reynolds Mountains. While the primary purpose of the organization is ensuring the adoption of responsible land use policies in these areas, the initial issue driving the organization’s formation is a proposed development, Cornerstone, which would sit just below the ridges of these mountains.

CRLU is concerned about development in steep slope areas because of increased erosion, storm water runoff, and associated traffic in downslope neighborhoods. The proposed Cornerstone development would add 184 condominium units configured in 4-story buildings on a steep slope area above the Sherwood Heights and Lakeview Park neighborhoods in North Asheville. Runoff and traffic from this development could significantly stress storm water infrastructure and roads in downslope neighborhoods. Furthermore, this development would be on one of the last undeveloped mountain ridges viewable from Asheville.

“Developments of this type in steep slope areas represent a significant risk to downslope residents,” said CRLU board chair Tammy Leino. “As CRLU, we want to make sure that the quality of life we all enjoy in Asheville and surrounding areas will be maintained for years to come.”

CRLU has launched a website (citizensforresponsiblelanduse.org) where interested parties can find more information on the objectives of the organization as well as news and upcoming events associated with CRLU. CRLU is a member-supported, not-for-profit organization welcoming members from around the Asheville area who share their concerns about responsible steep-slope development.
