Old Fort’s Mountain Gateway Museum hosts Railroad Day, Sept. 19

The Mountain Gateway Museum and Heritage Center of Old Fort will host its Railroad Day on Saturday, Sept. 19, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.In addition to train-related programming and goods for sale, the event includes face painting, a trackless train ride, a photo booth, food from Mr. Gene’s Fish and BBQ and other family-friendly activities. A fundraising team from Davidson’s Fort will also be serving hamburgers and hotdogs.

The day’s programming includes morning talks on historic railroad developments as well as future plans for Western North Carolina’s rail transportation infrastructure, as detailed by a NC Department of Transportation representative from the Rail Division. Operation Lifesaver will speak about rail safety.

In the afternoon, the Norfork Southern Lawmen Band will play in the museum’s amphitheater, and various antique work cars (hand pump cars and some Fairmont Speeders, for example) will be on display. Model train sets provided by the WNC Model RR Club, the Toe River Model RR Club and the Apple Valley Model RR Club will also be on display, along with a whistle truck and various train whistles from the Watauga Valley Railroad Historical Society & Museum.
