PARI will present info, discuss new Asheville observatory on Jan. 10

Full announcement from PARI:

A new observatory on the UNC-Asheville campus will be the subject of an Evening at PARI presentation Friday, January 10, at PARI. The program open to the public and will include a tour of the PARI campus and, weather permitting, celestial observations using PARI’s telescopes.

“The University of North Carolina-Asheville (UNCA) and the Astronomy Club of Asheville will soon open a jointly operated observatory on the UNCA campus,” said Dr. Brian Dennison, UNCA Professor and the program presenter. “The observatory will serve both UNCA and the surrounding community through education, student research and public outreach. The building has a large roll-off roof allowing full access to the sky for two permanently mounted telescope systems. In addition, a large patio will provide space for numerous small telescopes and a warm room will provide ample space for classroom activities. During the Evening at PARI presentation I will describe the facility and some of our initial plans for public outreach and access.”

Dr. Dennison is currently the Glaxo-Welcome Distinguished Professor at UNCA. He previously served as Professor of Physics and Director of the Institute for Particle Physics and Astrophysics at Virginia Tech, a Senior Fulbright Scholar at the Onsala Space Observatory in Sweden and a Visiting Scientist at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory. Dr. Dennison received his Ph. D. degree from Cornel University.

The Evening at PARI program will begin at 7:00 p.m. with the presentation, followed by a campus tour, a trip to the Exhibit Gallery and an observing session. The program will take place regardless of the weather so attendees are encouraged to dress appropriately for being outside and to wear comfortable walking shoes. Each participant will also have the opportunity to have a photo taken with a PARI telescope and will receive a subscription to the PARI newsletter and a 10% discount on PARI merchandise.

Reservations are required and will be accepted until 3:00 p.m. the day of the event. Evening at PARI programs cost $20 per adult, $15 for seniors/military and $10 for children under 14. Register and pay online at www.pari.edu or call (828) 862-5554. For additional information contact PARI Education Director Christi Whitworth at cwhitworth@pari.edu.
