Permitting process streamlined as Development Services rolls out digital residential permit application and review tool

Press release from city of Asheville:

Delivery of digital tools to make the permitting process more streamlined continues at the Asheville Development Services Department (DSD) with their latest release — an online application for residential building permits. Find it at develop.residentialplans.ashevillenc.gov.

Customers can now skip the lobby and submit residential permit applications online. The application links to helpful guidelines too, such as a residential application requirements checklist and digital submission guidelines.

Once applicants make submissions, they are notified that the application has been received for review. They can check the status of their application electronically 24/7 through the Citizen Access website.

This newest release is an addition to DSD’s Development Portal, unveiled in 2018.

“Digital applicant submission has been the most requested item in DSD’s quarterly customer surveys,” said DSD Director Ben Woody. “Along with the electronic submittal tools, the Development Services Department is also focused on improving permit review time frames.”

Other new resources on the Development Portal include a glossary of terms, integration of the City’s SimpliCity search engine, which contains zoning information, and an inspection guide.

DSD permitted 327 single family homes in 2018.
