PFLAG plans protest of HB2 on steps of Henderson County Courthouse

Press release from Flat Rock-Hendersonville Chapter of Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians and Gays:

The Flat Rock-Hendersonville Chapter of PFLAG (Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) will hold a rally protesting North Carolina’s recent HB 2, which nullifies existing, and prohibiting future, local ordinances that expand protections for the LGBT community. The event will take place on Friday, April 15 starting at 5:00 pm in front of of the Henderson County Historic Courthouse, 100 North Main Street in Hendersonville.

Speakers include Rev. Jim McKinley, pastor of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Hendersonville, and Archer Faust, a member of a transgender support group in Hendersonville.  The rally is sponsored by the Campaign for Southern Equality and co-sponsored by the Henderson County chapter of the NAACP.

“We want to give the community a chance to protest against this bill which is about discrimination against many people including the GLBT community.  Prohibiting people from using the bathroom of the gender to which they identify is just one small part,” said chapter president Jerry Miller.  “To name a few others – it prohibits communities from passing ordinances which affect wages, and other working issues. It also effects children by prohibiting municipalities from protecting minors in the workplace, and it violates the right for anyone to sue the state in any discrimination case.”

Founded in 1972 with the simple act of a mother publicly supporting her gay son, PFLAG (Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) is the nation’s largest family and ally organization. Uniting people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) with families, friends, and allies, PFLAG is committed to advancing equality and full societal affirmation of LGBTQ people through its threefold mission of support, education, and advocacy. PFLAG has over 400 chapters and 200,000 members and supporters crossing multiple generations of American families in major urban centers, small cities, and rural areas in all 50 states.
