Press release from the Polk County Democratic Party:
On Saturday, Oct. 26, the Polk County Democratic Party will host a debate between David Wilson Brown and Gina Collias, the two Democratic candidates for the United States House of Representatives N.C. 10 seat currently held by Patrick McHenry.
The debate is part of the county party’s Fall Rally and will take place at the Steps to HOPE Community Room, located at 60 Ward Street, Columbus. The rally starts with an informal early dinner at 4:30 p.m. There will be brief speeches from a few local candidates. The debate will start between 5:30 and 6:00 p.m. and will last for 45 minutes. Party chair Andy Millard will serve as moderator and timer.
The debate format and questions, which have been provided to both candidates, is included below:
OPENING STATEMENT: 2 minutes each (5 minutes total)
ROUND ONE: 90 seconds each, rebuttals at moderator’s discretion (20 minutes total)
- Why are you the best candidate to beat Patrick McHenry?
- How would you address the issue of healthcare?
- How would you address the issue of gun violence?
- How would you address the issue of the environment and climate change?
- Talk about an issue not addressed in the previous questions. Focus on issues affecting District 10. Address as many or as few issues as you’d like in 90 seconds.
- A good politician must be a good storyteller. Tell us a 90-second story. It can be funny or serious, true or made-up, personal to you or not, with or without a moral.
ROUND TWO: 3 minutes total
We will take three minutes for the candidates to engage in a 1-on-1 conversation. (NOTE: This round is currently the source of some discussion among the participants and may be altered.)LIGHTNING ROUND: 15 seconds each (4 minutes total)

- Who is your all-time favorite president?
- Who is your hero?
- What is your worst trait?
- What is your best trait?
- Do you have any pets?
- What hobby or hobbies do you enjoy?
QUESTIONS FROM THE AUDIENCE: no more than 60 seconds per answer (10 minutes total)
