Here’s the press release from the Bellamy campaign:
POLK COUNTY DEMOCRATIC WOMEN WELCOME NC-10 CANDIDATE BELLAMY
Columbus, NC – Terry Bellamy, Asheville Mayor and Congressional candidate (NC-10), was warmly welcomed to a packed Polk County Democratic Headquarters Monday, February 27, 2012 during the Polk Democratic Women’s monthly lunch and speaker event.
Bellamy gave an impassioned glimpse into her background, experiences and influences in her life that compelled her to run for and successfully win elected offices for the past 12 years. In addition, she fielded questions from attendees on issues ranging from economic development, education and training to nuclear energy, workforce housing and social security, often drawing applause and nods of agreement.
The range of topics to which Bellamy was able to provide thoughtful and well-informed responses led one listener to ask, “Is there anything you aren’t an expert on?” To which Bellamy quickly responded with a twinkle in her eye, “You know, Pat McCrory said the exact same thing to me at a Mayor’s conference a couple of years ago…”
Bellamy is running for the Democratic nomination in the newly redrawn 10th Congressional District. The winner of the May 8th primary will face incumbent Republican Patrick McHenry in November’s general election.
Terry Bellamy is serving her second term as mayor of Asheville, NC. She is the first African-American and the youngest person elected mayor of the city. She is the Executive Director of The Arc of Buncombe County, serves on the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and the Land-of-Sky Regional Council. Bellamy was appointed to the 21st Century Transportation Committee, the Joint Legislative Committee on Housing and the North Carolina League of Municipalities Board of Directors.
I am wishing Mayor Bellamy the best in her pursuit of congressional candidacy. She has the capabilities and has matured in her tenure of politics. However, the challenge of bringing unity to the newly reformed congressional district does have issues of leadership to unite “We The People”. Let’s all see where this goes. Good Luck Terry!… Dr. Milton Byrd
