PruittHealth helps Air Force vet visit Arlington memorial

Information provided by event organizers:

In February, PruittHealth coordinated a trip to Arlington, Virginia, so that United States Air Force veteran Patsy Phillips could see the Women in Military Service for America Memorial.

Phillips lives at the North Carolina State Veterans Home in Black Mountain, a facility that is part of the PruittHealth family. Phillips was a charter member of the memorial, and although she attended the ground breaking, she was unable to visit the memorial upon its completion because of a stroke.

Phillips’ tour guide was a U.S. Navy veteran who was the first female to serve on the USS Nimitz. When asked about her trip, Phillips pointed out that the ceiling of the memorial is made of glass. “It can be broken,” she said. During her trip, Philips also toured the White House and the U.S. Capitol, where she was presented with an American flag that had been flown over the building in her honor.

Phillips’ time in the U.S. Air Force motivated her to pursue a career in nursing. She was a nurse for 30 years.

After her trip, Philips shared her experiences with her fellow residents on March 21 at the home in Black Mountain.
