Public hearing for Duke Energy’s proposed power plant, Jan. 26

From MountainTrue:

Duke initally planned to replace the coal plant with a 650-megawatt natural gas-fired power plant and a new 45-mile transmission line that wold have cut through our mountains, farmlands and communities to a substation in Campobello, SC.

But thousands of people spoke out and in November the utility decided to scrap the transmission lines and substation and reconfigure the gas power plant as two 280-megawatt main units and a 192-megawatt “peaking” unit to be built in 2023 if efforts to reduce regional electricity demands are unsuccessful, totalling 752-megawatts of natural gas-fueled electricity capacity. On January 26 the public will have a final chance to speak out on Duke Energy’s plans before they’re approved by the North Carolina Utilities Commission.

Please plan to attend the North Carolina Utilities Commission public hearing on Duke Energy’s proposed power plant:

When: 7 p.m. January 26, 2016

Where: Buncombe County Courthouse, Court Plaza, Asheville NC 28801

Please RSVP here to get the latest information and resources leading up to the hearing.

MountainTrue and our partners question the size of the power plant as being larger than needed and want to see real commitments to cleaner, safer more affordable solutions like energy efficiency and renewable energy sources. MountainTrue continues to work on multiple fronts to get the best plan possible for our region, including in close partnership with Duke Energy staff, local governments and community organizations.
