“Our Body: The Universe Within” brings human bodies and organs to Johnson City

Johnson City, Tenn. — World-renowned exhibition, “Our Body: The Universe Within” is coming to Johnson City’s Hands On! Museum beginning Feb. 7. This limited-time, artful presentation consisting of actual human bodies and organs is appropriate for all ages. The display, which has been seen by millions in select cities, literally goes “under the skin”, revealing the mysteries of the human anatomy. The bodies, specimens and organs have been preserved using a process known as polymer impregnation so they can be viewed in a dignified, educational way.

“This exhibition is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the whole family,” says Andy Marquart, Executive Director of Hands On!. “Every visitor who goes through this amazing experience will leave with a whole new appreciation and understanding of the human body.”

Visitors will journey through each of the body’s major systems seeing first hand how they function and relate to other systems while viewing actual human bodies and all of the human organs.

This extraordinary exhibition was designed to educate, enlighten, and allow all who attend to understand the complexities of our bodies and has only been available in major cities within the U.S. and abroad.

“This exhibit represents our continuing effort to evolve our Museum and its impact in our community,” says Marquart.

Hands On! partnered with Donate Life to bring this exhibit to Johnson City. Donate Life wanted to be part of this exhibit because it shows how our bodies work, and can work to the save lives of others. The elements of education within this exhibit, explain how our heart beats, how our blood flows and how we are all the same on the inside.

“We hope when people understand how their bodies work, and how their bodies can work in others, they’ll sign up to be organ donors to save up to 8 lives,” says Joy McCray, of Donate Life. “Right now in the United States, 130,000 people are waiting for a transplant. That’s more than the population of Johnson City and Kingsport combined. We encourage everyone to visit this exhibit with an open mind to learn about the mystery and miraculous things inside of each of us.”

The exhibit opens at Hands On! Museum on Feb. 7. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for children. Group pricing and Museum combo admission tickets are also available. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday. For hours and more information, please visit handsonmuseum.org or call (423) 434-HAND.

Donate Life will also be hosting several events on campus at ETSU during the month of February not only to promote this exhibit, but to answer questions in our community about organ donation. Be sure to look for them at the home basketball games during the month at February and on campus. For any information about how you can sign up to save lives through organ donation, please visit our website at donatelifetn.org or contact Joy McCray at (423) 952-1139.
