Star Wars in academia: local prof writes on blockbuster

Dr. Amy Sturgis, adjunct professor of Liberal Studies at Lenoir-Rhyne University, recently published an essay entitled, “Star Wars, Remixed: George Lucas’ Universe Is a Mashup Masterpiece.” It is featured in the January 2016 issue of Reason Magazine, both in the hard-copy edition and online format. Sturgis has been a contributor to the magazine since 1999. Reason is a monthly magazine, published by the Reason Foundation, which features contemporary politics, culture, and ideas. It was named one of the 50 best magazines in 2003 and 2004 by the Chicago Tribune. In the past, Sturgis has been interviewed on NPR’s “Talk of the Nation” program as a Star Wars expert.

Sturgis earned her Ph.D. in intellectual history from Vanderbilt University. She is an author, editor, scholar, educator, speaker, and podcaster with specialties in the fields of Science Fiction/Fantasy and Native American Studies. In addition to more than forty articles and essays in various magazines, scholarly journals, and books, she has also published four books of her own and edited six others. This past year, shereceived the 2015 award for Best Magazine Review/Criticism/Column, given by the Los Angeles Press Club at the 57th Southern California Journalism Award ceremony. She received the award for her article, “Not Your Parent’s Dystopias: Millennial Fondness for Worlds Gone Wrong”.

Sturgis has done extensive research on the topic of young adult dystopian fiction, and has become a sought after speaker for universities and conferences. Just this past year, she spoke at the World Science Fiction Convention in London.
