The A-B Tech Community College Foundation will present the second in a series of summer Afternoon Teas and Lectures at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, in the Fernihurst Building on the A-B Tech Asheville campus.
Kieta Osteen-Cochrane will speak on the legacy of St. Genevieve’s and Gibbons Hall and “Education on the Hill.” Victoria Road, although best known as the location of A-B Tech, has deep roots in education. It has been home to a variety of educational institutions through the centuries, including a Presbyterian boarding school for girls, St. Genevieve and Gibbons Halls.
St. Genevieve alumna Kieta Osteen-Cochrane, class of 1960, attended the school from kindergarten through 12th grade and has deep roots in Western North Carolina. Working with fellow St. Genevieve and Gibbons Hall alum to conserve their past, Ms. Cochrane has served on the “Save the Ivy” and “Save the Grotto” committees since 2011. These committees received The Griffin Award for their success in Historic Stewardship in 2013 for their efforts. She now serves as education/programs chair on the Preservation Society of Asheville and Buncombe County Board of Directors.
On July 16, John Turk and members of the Men’s Garden Club will share the history of Frederick Law Olmsted in Asheville and the Garden Club’s plan to recreate the Olmstead blueprints for the garden of the Smith-McDowell House.
