Sunday afternoon fatal motor vehicle collision

Asheville, NC (January 22, 2024):  Asheville Police Department Patrol Officers are continuing to investigate a fatal motor vehicle accident that occurred Sunday afternoon on Sweeten Creek Road.

APD Patrol Officers responded to a motor vehicle crash with injury near the 75 block of Sweeten Creek Road around 4:27 p.m. on January 21. The preliminary investigation indicates a 2009 Honda Civic operated by Andrew Benjamin Freeman (06/23/1991) traveling northbound on Sweeten Creek Road near Caribou Road. Freeman attempted to illegally pass a vehicle at a high rate of speed, drove into oncoming traffic in the southbound lane, and then collided head-on with a 2018 Nissan Armada traveling in the southbound lane.

The driver of the 2018 Nissan Armada was transported to Mission Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Freeman was transported to Mission Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries; next of kin have been notified.
