Swannanoa-based small business honored at White House ceremony

The president of National Wiper Alliance, a Swannanoa based non-woven wiper supply company, was honored in a ceremony at the White House in celebration of National Small Business Week last Friday. The ceremony was hosted by the U.S. Small Business Administration to recognize national and state winners of small business awards from around the country.

National Wiper Alliance’s President Jeff Slosman was voted as one of North Carolina’s “Small Business Person of the Year” in recognition of his role in the company’s success and growth in the past year. According to SBA’s official guidelines for the nomination, awardees must display sustained expansion, growth in sales and workforce, increased revenue, and innovation in their field or industry, in addition to being involved in their local community.

National Wiper Alliance provides wiping products to a diverse clientele across the nation, including businesses in the aerospace, automotive, and hospitality industries. Operating out of a 13,000 square foot facility in Swannanoa, they specialize in dry-wiping products, with individual products tailored to the needs of their clientele.

“We believe that each relationship that we have, to the end user or to other companies, is an Alliance where we all work together to provide quality to all customers,” NWA says in an official statement on it’s website.

Slosman was one of 54 recipients—representing each state as well as the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands—honored at the awards ceremony on May 8 in the White House South Court Auditorium in Washington.  The awards ceremony included presentations by keynote speaker Rachel Roy, a nationally-recognized entrepreneur, fashion designer and philanthropist, as well as Treasury Deputy Secretary Sarah Bloom Raskin, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser, among others, according to a May 5 SBA press release in anticipation of the event.

“Small businesses created nearly 2 million of the roughly 3 million private-sector jobs generated in 2014,” SBA Administrator and White House Cabinet member Maria Contreras-Sweet in an official statement. “More than 7 million of the 11 million jobs created during our recovery have been generated by startups and small enterprises.”

Small Business Week, which serves to recognize the important role that small businesses play in the national and regional economies, has been celebrated since 1963. The theme of this year’s celebration was “Dream Big, Start Small,” with events held in Miami, Los Angeles, San Antonio, New York and Washington, D.C. between May 4 and May 8, when the awards were presented.
