The Swannanoa Valley Museum says it still has openings for a special guided tour through the historic North Fork Valley this Saturday, November 14, according to a press release from the museum. The tour will take hikers through the ruins of the once prosperous North Fork community, now a protected wilderness area and part of the Asheville watershed.
Xpress highlighted the history of the North Fork Valley in a February 28 article (“Thru-hiking history”). This weekend, with the permission of the City of Asheville Water Department and the North Carolina Conservation Trust, the SVM will lead two tours of twenty-five hikers each, with the first tour beginning at 7:30 a.m. and the second at 1:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon. Participants will get the opportunity to explore the ruins of the Rod & Gun Club, the Sunnalee Lodge, an old Slave Graveyard, among other sites. Sturdy shoes and weather-appropriate attire are recommended, as are a water bottle and snack.
The cost of the tour is $75 for members of the Swannanoa Valley Museum and $100 for the general public. Registration and payment can be submitted online at history.swannanoavalleymuseum.org, by phone at (828) 669-9566 or by emailing info@swannanoavalleymuseum.org.

Historic North Fork Valley Tour

The Swannanoa Valley Museum will lead two tours through the historic North Fork Valley Community in the Asheville Watershed. With special permission from the City of Asheville Water Department and the North Carolina Conservation Trust, the museum is offering this historic tour.
The tour will be on Saturday afternoon at 1:30 PM and will be primarily a driving tour through the west side of the watershed making stops at different locations. You will be able to walk to various ruins along the route such as the Rod & Gun Club, the Sunnalee Lodge, an old Slave Graveyard, which are all slowly being consumed by wilderness.
Be sure to wear sturdy hiking shoes and dress for the weather. To register for this event please submit payment to ensure your spot. Space is extremely limited, 25 participants per tour.
