TheatreUNCA to stage virtual performance, ‘Hindsight 2020,’ March 5-6

Press release from UNC Asheville:

TheatreUNCA will stage two virtual performances of Hindsight 2020, a project using performed written pieces, recorded performances and live-streamed dance and music performances that explore empathy, expression, and realization in regard to the ways in which the events of 2020 have affected individuals and communities at large. Hindsight 2020 will stream via Zoom at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 5, and again at 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 6.

Hindsight 2020 is directed by Stephanie Hickling Beckman, was created to encourage creative voices, challenge stereotypes, and open minds and hearts to the struggles and successes of all people who comprise our communities.

Director Hickling Beckman is managing artistic director for Different Strokes Performing Arts Collective, non-profit organization in Asheville “committed to making theatre, building community, facilitating awareness, and changing the world, one play at a time.” Hickling Beckman has been active in Asheville’s theatre scene for more than 20 years, and has worked with several local theatre companies as an actor, stage manager, and director, and toured nationally as an actor. She’s also served on numerous community organization boards, including the NC ACLU, Asheville Area Arts Council, Asheville Writers in The Schools, Youth Outright, The Center for Diversity and Education at UNC Asheville, and many others.

“Always, first and foremost, I believe that the arts can save the world,” said Hickling Beckman. “When I began to develop the concept of Hindsight 2020, I wanted to curate an evening of performances that would reflect and, in some way, document the deeply emotional and uniquely cataclysmic year we’ve had. I was excited to open this project at UNCA because I think this generation of young adults has important and introspective things to say and I wanted to provide them a platform and an audience. My hope for this show is that it reminds us that we are all in this together, and maybe, just maybe bring with it some hope for tomorrow.”

Hindsight 2020 performances are free, with donations accepted; for information and tickets visit https://www.unca.edu/events-and-news/event/hindsight-2020/.
