Training partnership activity for Asheville’s police and fire agencies in conjunction with Mission

Press release from Asheville Police Department:

Over the next couple months the Asheville Fire Department  and Asheville Police Department will be partnering with Mission Hospitals to use the MAHEC building for scenario based training exercises. This cooperative effort displays how local agencies come together for the betterment of the community.

Search and rescue techniques, rapid intervention to rescue a downed firefighter, use of thermal imaging cameras and forcible entry set-ups are just a few of the scenarios that will be played out by Asheville firefighters using the MAHEC building to help sharpen skills. Police officers will also use the MAHEC building to enhance their skills with rapid deployment scenarios which train and equip first responding patrol officers to instantly react to potential armed individuals.

This is not the first time these agencies have collaborated with the goal to be a unified system in the event of an emergency. AFD, APD and Mission Hospitals have worked together in the past over table top drills, mass deconning for HazMat and mass casualty and active shooter drills. Exercising our response with community partners is a crucial part of both AFD and APD’s training. It allows us to evaluate our procedures, tactics and communications, and understand how each other responds prior to a real-world event.
