Press release from UNC Asheville:
Thursday, Sep 4th, 2014
UNC Asheville’s D. Hiden Ramsey Library has been awarded a $25,000 grant to be used for its new digital media design lab, supporting student and faculty work in the digital humanities and the liberal arts. This competitive grant from the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) was awarded by the State Library of North Carolina, a division of the state’s Department of Cultural Resources.
The grant will be used to fund an audio booth for editing, recording, and use of closed-captioning software to produce accessible content that meets the principles of universal design. The funding, which comes under provisions of the federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA), also will support improved green screen technology used in video production.
“The library is transitioning from serving as a repository of information to becoming a center for creation and collaboration,” said Leah Dunn, university librarian at UNC Asheville. “Providing tools that support digital literacy and accessibility in the library is essential as we move forward.”
The IMLS is the primary source of federal support for the nation’s 122,000 libraries and 17,500 museums; it provides funds to state library agencies using a population-based formula. UNC Asheville’s Ramsey Library received one of the 56 competitive grants for fiscal year 2014-2015 awarded to North Carolina libraries from this year’s federal allotment of $4,173,865.
