The Blue Banner, UNC Asheville’s student newspaper, earned eight awards at the annual statewide College Media Association’s conference on Feb. 27 offered virtually this year at William Peace University. The conference featured breakout sessions and awards presentations. Each year the NCCMA co-host with different college campuses in the state.
The Blue Banner received the following awards for 2020:
First place in News Writing: Courtney Garcia “Report shows unsurprising discrimination in APD policing”
First place in Feature Writing: Kendall Anthony-Busbee “Struggling to live authentically: Transgender student shares his experiences”
First place in Single or Two Page Design: Camille Nevarez-Hernandez “Valentine’s Day”
Second place in Feature Writing: Ezra Maille “UNCA student overcomes financial difficulties to pursue higher education”
Second place in Digital Storytelling: Hayden Robinson “Bulldog Service Announcement: COVID-19”
Second place in Photography: Camille Nevarez-Hernandez “Black Lives Matter”
Honorable Mention in News Writing: Brailey Sheridan “Black women socialized to perform care work, they say”
A Best of Show in Online News: The Blue BannerThe N.C. College Media Association, sponsored by the UNC School of Journalism and Mass Communication at UNC-Chapel Hill, offers a one-day conference on a different campus each year to hold educational workshops and recognize outstanding work from the state’s student newspapers, yearbooks, and online news organizations.
