RALEIGH and WINSTON-SALEM—The NC DREAM Team and El Cambio are calling for people across the state to take action in support of Uriel Alberto, 24, an undocumented youth facing deportation after protesting anti-immigrant laws in the state. As of now, Alberto has been on hunger strike in jail for over 96 hours and intends to continue it until he is free.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement has placed Alberto in deportation proceedings despite the strong public outcry, frustrating those who knew him and many others who support rights for immigrants. Alberto has a two-year-old son, Julian, and was pursuing an education at Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, North Carolina, where he ran track.
NC DREAM Team and El Cambio are asking for letters of support on behalf of Alberto; several individuals in El Cambio have joined his hunger strike in solidarity. At the time of release, nearly 2,000 people have signed an online petition created over the weekend demanding that Alberto be released.
Alberto was arrested after protesting the Select Committee on the State’s Role in Immigration Policy, a group of legislators of which the vast majority have supported anti-immigrant bills in the past session.
