The survivors of the 7.8-magnitude earthquake in Nepal have seen a month pass as they strive to return to some kind of normalcy. The land is unstable with landslides and aftershocks still a risk. To make matters worse, rain is coming. The monsoon rains will be upon them in a matter of weeks, and with rain will come greater risk of disease. The aid coming from America and other wealthier countries is a lifeline for the people of Nepal. Nepalese need for aid has not lessened and the people of our community continue to rise to the challenge.  Two local events in the coming weeks will support feeding, clothing, and sheltering earthquake victims in the affected regions around Kathmandu.

Following is a press release from Reynolds High School

The event is the creation of English teacher Nicolette Filson’s two sophomore English classes.

“After a few days of watching the devastation unfold on CNN, one of my students, Estrella Gomez-Justice, said she felt really bad for the people of Nepal and didn’t know how to help, but felt compelled to do something,” said Filson. “The whole class looked at each other, and we determined we should do something because we could do something.”

The two classes, along with the R.E.A.C.H. club, are working with “Save the Children,” an organization that has been working in Nepal since 1976. Gates to the football field will open at 7:45, with the movie The Sandlot beginning at 8:30. Guests are encouraged to bring blankets and pillows, and concessions will be available. Guests are asked not to bring outside concessions or chairs.

Tickets are available at the school for $3 in advance and $5 the night of the event. Those interested in supporting the efforts in other ways may visit www.gofundme.com/ACRHSnepal.

A week later, an organization with local ties, The Prem Rawat Foundation (TPRF), is also hosting a fund raising event.
