Veterans for Peace 29th Annual National Convention to be held in Asheville

Veterans for Peace (VFP) Chapter 099 of Western North Carolina, a local organization of military veterans and associates engaged in promoting peace, is the host chapter for the Veterans For Peace 29th Annual National Convention, to be held at the University of North Carolina Asheville July 23 – 27, 2014. This year’s convention theme is:

Peace or Perish – Abolish War on Planet and Poor

Cynthia McKinney, a 6-term congresswoman from Georgia, and the first African-American woman to represent Georgia in Congress, is the keynote speaker. She will speak on Saturday July 26, at 7:45pm, at the Banquet to be held at the Morris Hellenic Cultural Center.

Folk singer John McCutcheon, the featured entertainer, will perform in concert on Friday July 25, at 8:00pm at UNCA’s Lipinsky Auditorium. McCutcheon was described by legendary folk singer Pete Seeger as “a great singer and songwriter who is committed to helping hard-working people everywhere to organize and push this world in a better direction”.

The convention features over 40 workshops on topics of current interest to veterans and the general public. 10 of these workshops feature local presenters.

There are 5 plenary sessions, including Post 9-11 Veteran Voices, Peace at Home and Peace Abroad, and the Full Disclosure Project. There are also 8 film sessions, which include 15 films on topics ranging from Muhammad Ali to Bradley Manning.
