Volunteers show out for United Way of Henderson County’s Annual Days of Caring

News release from the United Way of Henderson County:
On Friday, May 10th, over 300 community volunteers came together to work on 31 projects at 24 Henderson County nonprofit agencies as part of United Way of Henderson County’s annual Days of Caring.
Now in its eleventh year, Days of Caring is hosted annually on the second Friday and Saturday of May. The event brings focus to the nonprofit community by inviting local residents to spend several hours volunteering to assist with maintenance and improvement projects that will help the organizations focus on their missions.
Volunteers tackled a variety of chores including gardening and landscaping, construction and painting, and cleaning and organizing. Many spoke of how they appreciated making a difference while enjoying comradery and laughter throughout the day. Marsha Justice, HR Director at Wilsonart International was with her team at a Habitat for Humanity project and commented, “We are thrilled to be able to be here today and contribute to our community. We believe in taking care of our Wilsonart family and part of doing that is reaching out into the community as well.”
The agencies hosting the projects not only benefited from the work contributed, they were able to meet local residents and share how they serve the community. “It was our pleasure! Everyone was so lovely and kind. They truly made an impact on our garden,” noted Fisayo Bashorun, Office Administrator, referencing the quality work contributed by the Allen Tate/Beverly-Hanks team who volunteered at the St. Gerard House Feed the Need garden.
On Saturday May 11th, volunteers gathered at the US Postal Annex to participate in the National Association of Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive – the largest one-day food drive in the country. Residents were asked to leave a bag of nonperishable food by their mailbox for letter carriers to collect. “Contributions to the food drive this year were incredible, nearly doubling the donations from 2023,” commented Denise Cumbee Long, Executive Director of United Way. “We collected and packed for distribution over 36,000 pounds of food – all given by Henderson County residents and all to be shared with Henderson County residents experiencing food insecurity. This is a testament to the kindness of our community.”
Days of Caring would not be possible without the support of sponsor businesses. Gold Level: AdventHealth Hendersonville and Publix Super Market Charities; Silver Level: Allen Tate/Beverly-Hanks, Champion Comfort Experts, Current, Pratt & Whitney, Reid & Reid Pediatric Dentistry, and WestRock; Bronze Level: Aeroflow, Carolina Village, Dunlap Construction, Hendersonville/Mills River Dental, Kimberly-Clark, Pepsi of Hickory, Skytop Orchards, and United Community.
