Walk with a Doc July 10

Press release:

Haywood Regional Medical Center has launched a new program, Walk with a Doc. The program is every Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Lake Junaluska Kern Center or Canton Rec Park. The location varies by date, and each Saturday a different Haywood doc attends hosting a topic of interest and then engages in a healthy and encouraging walk with participants.
“In addition to the health benefits of simply walking, this program allows participants the chance to talk with local doctors freely about topics of concern, while also improving their health. That’s a win-win to me,” said Jody Schmit, certified nurse midwife. “I hope to see a large crowd come join me to hear how pain can be alleviated by movement!”

Date:               Saturday, July 10

Time:              10 am

Location:      Lake Junaluska – Kern Center Porch (adjacent to the pool)

Topic:             Pain Relief with Movement

Doctor:           Jody Schmit, Certified Nurse Midwife, Haywood Women’s Medical Center

Why walk? “There’s no question that increasing exercise, even moderately, reduces the risks or many diseases, including coronary heart disease, breast and colon cancer and Type 2 diabetes,” said Dr. Kate Queen, Rheumatology. “Research has even shown that you could gain two hours of life for each hour that you exercise regularly.”

According to the American Heart Association, walking as little as 30 minutes a day can provide these benefits, as well:

  •   Improve blood pressure and blood sugar levels
  •  Help maintain a healthy body weight and lower the risk of obesity
  •   Enhance mental well-being
  •   Reduce the risk of osteoporosis

Every walk is free and pre-registration is not required. Just show up! Free blood pressure readings are provided by local Haywood Community College and Western Carolina University nursing students.
