Ana Lara, a Warren Wilson College student from Louisville, Ky., has been selected by Campus Compact to receive the 2014 Newman Civic Fellows Award.
According to Campus Compact, the award “honors inspiring college student leaders who have demonstrated an investment in finding solutions for challenges facing communities throughout the country. Through service, research, and advocacy, Newman Civic Fellows are making the most of their college experiences to better understand themselves, the root causes of social issues, and effective mechanisms for creating lasting change.”
Lara, a junior who is double majoring in psychology and sociology/anthropology, is a student leader active in issues of education and social justice. She has worked closely with local organizations to create awareness and understanding about education reform. She is recognized as a campus leader through her work as co-founder of a campus mentor program for students of color and co-coordinator of a multicultural campus group that promotes diversity of the local Latino community. Lara also has aligned her academic research with the goals of a national program that focuses on building the leadership and capacity of women of color.
Campus Compact describes itself as “a national coalition of more than 1,100 college and university presidents who are committed to fulfilling the civic purposes of higher education.
