Western North Carolina veterans receive over $2 million in benefits

Press release from U.S. Dept. of Veteran Affairs:

The Winston-Salem Regional Office (WSRO) has stepped up to support recovery initiatives for Western North Carolina by mobilizing resources and providing targeted assistance following recent natural disasters.

We have prioritized claims for Veterans in the Western North Carolina region as they recover from the effects of Hurricane Helene. This targeted approach has allowed for the expedited processing of claims and appointments, leading to tangible impacts for the Veteran community.

On November 15, Winston-Salem hosted a Veterans Benefits Fair in Asheville, N.C., to help veterans file claims for VA benefits and connect to their earned benefits. During the event, over 180 Veterans and survivors were seen, including 27 homeless/at-risk Veterans. Over $40,000 in retroactive benefits were paid during the event, benefits that will help the Veterans in the area as they recover from Helene.

As of November 16, 2024, we have processed over 1,000 claims from Western North Carolina and awarded over $2 million in retroactive benefits. Our office will continue prioritizing appointments and claims for our Veterans and their families in the affected area.
