WNC for the Planet, a collective of local nonprofit organizations, universities, and businesses have teamed up to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Earth Day with virtual opportunities for environmental education, advocacy and community events across Western North Carolina.
When WNC for the Planet began in 2018, the collective launched an online community calendar at WNCforthePlanet.org where the public could learn about ways to celebrate Earth Day. Now that people are not able to gather in person, the collective has shifted the calendar to highlight the virtual ways the public can still be involved throughout the month of April.
“It pains us all to see trash scattered across our community, and in the past we have traditionally partnered with West Asheville Business Association, New Belgium and other local businesses like Pizza Mind and The Hop to provide volunteers with great perks to help clean up our streets. Although, we cannot encourage this type of group volunteer effort due to the recent coronavirus outbreak, there is still plenty you can do as an individual to celebrate Earth Month and positively impact our community! We have stocked our cleanup supply stations around town so that people can continue cleaning on their own, but please abide by the safety measures that are in place by our Governor,” Chelsea Rath, Asheville GreenWorks Community Engagement Coordinator.
WNC for the Planet is a proud supporter of Earth Day Network’s effort to build the world’s largest environmental movement to drive transformative change for people and planet. WNC for the Planet will feature virtual opportunities for environmental education, advocacy and community events for people of all ages. Engagement opportunities will be offered across Western North Carolina well beyond the City of Asheville by Conserving Carolina, MountainTrue, Asheville GreenWorks and other organizations.
