Press release from the Western North Carolina AIDS Project:

Saturday, Dec. 1 marks the 30th anniversary of World AIDS Day. WNCAP will celebrate with a complimentary community luncheon. Join us in toasting the past, present, and future of the HIV Movement. The event will be held at the DoubleTree by Hilton (115 Hendersonville Rd., Asheville, NC, 28803) from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. The event is free but space is limited, so please RSVP today by emailing Randy Rodriguez at randy@wncap.org or by calling (828) 252-7489 ext. 313.

Our featured speaker is Mike Smith, the co-founder of the AIDS Memorial Quilt. During his tenure as the Managing Director of the Quilt, it grew from an idea to more than 15,000 memorial panels in 20 countries. In 1989, he and Cleve Jones were nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize and the film about the Quilt, Common Threads, received the Academy Award for Best Documentary. In 1996, he produced the last full-scale display of the Quilt in Washington, D.C. He recently retired from a 33-year career leading AIDS advocacy and care organizations.
