Following a Monday, April 14 fire, local business owner Wendy Owens lost the contents of her store, R3MiX3D (remixed). Located on Merrimon Avenue, near Luella’s Bar-B-Que, the store served UNC-Asheville students as well as the North Asheville community. Owens told Xpress that she had chosen the location with the idea to create an artistic hub.
“My customers were a diverse demographic and ranged from 8 years to 80,” Owens says on her GoFundMe site, a fundraising effort to recoup some of the shop’s losses. “There was something for everyone. We were a grassroots business that thrived off the local college, Ashevile locals and tourists. I was becoming a destination for North Asheville.
“During the day we opperated as a vintage, upcycle and modern boutique and sold amazing crystals. At night we also hosted music events, workshops and community gatherings for all ages.”
The fire was a near-total loss for Owens. In an interview with the Citizen-Times she said “10,000 crystals of various sizes, lots of vintage clothing, jewelry, even my personal stuff in there” were destroyed. But where many business owners might give up, Owens says that she knows the Asheville community has a place for her, and she plans to rebuild.
Along with the online GoFundMe effort, Owens has coordinated “R3S33D The Vision” Fundraiser (Moogfest Afterpary) for R3MiX3D. (That’s “reseed the vision.”) The event takes place at the Eagle Street Coffee Emporium at 39 Eagle St. It starts at 3 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday, April 26 and 27 (for late-night Moogfest revelers), and also runs from 6:30 p.m.-12:30 a.m. on Sunday.
“Eye candy for your audio sensory pleasure,” says a press release for the event. “Come in, chilax, get down with sound and refuel for a good cause.” The late night/early morning happenings include “beats, glitches, ambient, minimal groves, spacescpaes and other frequencies. Plus a breakfast menu, coffee and refreshing vibes,” and a roster of musical artists including Quetzatl, Magmablood, K.Rosakruz, Infinite Geometry, 9th Phoenix, Quazaar, Jenna Gilmore, Trebled Mind and others.
“On Sunday, we will be accepting in-kind clothing clothing donations,” Owens adds. “The nature of the former R3MiX3D [was] a DIY all-ages audio visual space and independent boutique. Come donate your funky fresh threads, club wear, retro or hippy-trippy clothing, jewelry and accessories for a great cause.”
