Honor roll: Chalk up another win for A-B Tech’s top-notch culinary students. On Jan. 7, a six-member team from the college’s culinary program won first place at the American Culinary Federation’s state-wide Junior Hot Food Competition in Charlotte. The fact that A-B Tech students have won eight out of the past nine competitions didn’t dim the luster of their gold medal. “This win is very sweet,” says Chef Bronwen McCormick, a team coach and culinary instructor. “I think we have a chance to go all the way,” he adds, referencing upcoming regional and national competitions the team can advance to. The team’s winning meal had several courses, including an entree of chicken roulade with mushroom duxelles, fennel sausage, dilled tourneed cucumbers, horseradish gnocchi and roasted chicken sauce.

Culinary Showcase: Any serious WNC food aficionado should mark their calendars: The 14th Annual Asheville Culinary Showcase is coming to the Grove Park Inn on Thursday, Feb. 2, from 6 to 8 p.m. A consistently stellar event, this year’s showcase will feature local beers, wines and signature dishes from dozens of area restaurants and catering companies. Tickets are $40 for Chamber of Commerce members and $50 for everyone else. For more information, call 258-6130 or visit www.ashevillechamber.org/chamber/CulinaryShowcase.asp.

Bring me a sandwich: So you’re working in downtown Asheville and getting hungry, but just too darned busy to get away for lunch. What to do?
