Drinking can complicate wayfinding, which may be why the NC Wine & Grape Council has issued such a handsome map of North Carolina Wineries. The brochure, available from www.ncwine.org, features winery descriptions, addresses, Web sites and hours, making it the most useful tool besides a corkscrew for enjoying the state’s vino. The council, by the way, suggests recruiting a designated driver for your tour of the nearly 60 listed wineries.
The Fabulous Frankie Bones Restaurant and Lounge (their adjective, not ours) opens this week in Gerber Village in South Asheville. The restaurant, Asheville’s first non-franchised entry in the always-growing theme-dining market, specializes in steak, seafood and pasta. “When you walk into Frankie Bones, you’ll feel like [it’s] where Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and Joey Bishop would have hung out,” co-owner Bill Borg said in a press release. Like Carmel’s, which has consistently been serving up some of the best dinners downtown, Frankie Bones is a beach transplant: The first Frankie Bones opened in Hilton Head in 2004. The sweetest boys in Southern cooking are on their way to Asheville, Matt and Ted Lee, boiled-peanut champions and authors of The Lee Bros. Southern Cookbook: Stories and Recipes for Southerners and Would-Be Southerners, will appear at Malaprop’s on Wednesday, April 11, at 7 p.m. The Lees’ book of frogmore stew, red velvet cake and ambrosia recipes was recently nominated for a James Beard and two IACP awards.
