This is what punsters call egg-citing: The Inn on Church Street have won the “Inn-Credible Breakfast Cook-off,” sponsored by Select Registry: Distinguished Inns of North America, and Eggland’s Best eggs. The Hendersonville inn’s smoked mountain-trout cakes were judged good enough to win the grand prize: a C3 Turbochef oven.

Asheville restauranteur Eric Scheffer has transformed his space at 640 Merrimon Ave. from The Stickhouse Grille, which specialized in butter-free healthy eats, to Manny’s Burgers and Dogs, a counter-service joint named in honor of Scheffer’s Brooklynite father. The menu features char-grilled burgers, Nathan’s Famous dogs, chili-cheese fries and milkshakes.

Grenache has long been singing backup, populating the mysterious 20 percent of a bottle that’s billed as 80 percent Shiraz. But with the winemakers of Spain and Southern France leading the way, Grenache is now getting the star treatment as the featured varietal in a number of fine wines. The Market Place will explore the oft-ignored grape at a Wednesday, May 30, wine tasting. The 7 p.m. tasting costs $35 per person; call 252-4162 for reservations.
