Proving that good barbecue is more powerful than sentiment and sensation, Asheville’s 12 Bones Smokehouse last month beat out a Gulf Coast catfish joint that lost its roof to Hurricane Katrina and a Chicago eatery that earned the city’s first citation for serving foie gras, to win Good Morning America‘s Best Bites Challenge. The show solicited nominations from viewers across the country, and narrowed the field down to four contenders: Aunt Jenny’s fried catfish, buttermilk pie from Yesterday Cafe in Rutledge, Ga., a Chicago-style hot dog from Hot Doug’s and 12 Bones’ blueberry-chipotle BBQ ribs. “We do come up with some interesting sauces,” co-owner Sabra Kelly told GMA after being crowned champ.
On three Saturdays this Christmas, the French Broad Food Co-op Tailgate Market will bring to you: Candles for lighting, goat cheese for eating, organic soap for scrubbing and sustainably grown Christmas trees. The Fifth Annual Holiday Bazaar at 90 Biltmore Ave. features farmers, crafters and other vendors from both the FBTC Tailgate and North Asheville markets. The remaining installments of the popular holiday-shopping opportunity will be held on Dec. 15 and Dec. 22 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
