Garden Journal

A little night music: The N.C. Arboretum continues its Twilight Tuesday events with music from the Silverwood Trio on Tuesday, Aug. 14, from 5 to 7 p.m. The evening includes a guided tour of the gardens at dusk, light refreshments from the Savory Thyme Café and a stroll through the Arboretum’s indoor and outdoor art collections. What’s more, the Arboretum’s bonsai docents will be available in the Bonsai Exhibition Garden to talk about the collection. Admission is always free and parking is free on Tuesdays.

Cover yourself: The final date for strawberry growers to obtain crop insurance for the 2008 crop year in Buncombe, Haywood and Henderson counties is Aug. 31.  Current policyholders also have until that day to make any changes to existing contracts. A grower may secure up to $5,587 worth of coverage per acre under the plan. For a list of crop insurance agents, farmers may contact their local USDA Farm Service Agency office or log on to the Risk Management Agency Web site.

Where’s the beef?: Warren Wilson College will mail brochures for its annual beef-and-pork sale in September. If you are not on the mailing list, you can call or e-mail to join. The Warren Wilson Farm uses sustainable methods, excludes livetock from waterways, produces grass-based meat and avoids using any pesticides or herbicides in crop production. Contact Farm Manager Chase Hubbard at farm@warren-wilson.edu or call 771-3014.
