Rewatching Christopher Nolan’s The Prestige (2006), I found that I liked it even better than I’d remembered (hence the half-star increase from the original review, to the full five). This stylish and disturbing thriller—with science-fiction elements—gets my vote for the best movie Nolan has ever made and for the best performance Christian Bale has ever given. The fantastically intricate story of rival magicians is perfectly suited to both Nolan’s style and his thematic preoccupation with the nature of identity and memory. That the musings on memory can here be said to include the memories of the audience only enhances the whole thing. second viewing made me love this film as well; first time around it was great though, no doubt…I just caught a lot more, which really enhanced it all.
