The WNC Peace Coalition was founded in the days following the 9/11 attacks on New York City and Washington, DC. Today, the coalition continues to operate under the guiding principle found in its mission statement: “We are a coalition of groups and individuals promoting non-violent solutions to world conflicts.” If you or your group share the same desire to promote nonviolent solutions, then you can consider yourself members of the WNC Peace Coalition. The coalition does not keep membership rolls, nor does it charge dues. It is entirely supported by donations from the local community.
The coalition hosts teach-ins, walks, rallies, movie nights and panel discussions. It also maintains an informational phone line, called the Peace Line, for the community. In March of every year, there is a rally to show the coalition’s opposition to the continuing occupation of Iraq.
Member Harold Brokaw says, “We help people and our member groups to network, so that our voice for peace is amplified. Everyone wants peace. There are many threads to this work and people have organized various groups to address them. The Peace Coalition helps us be more effective.”
