Campaign Calendar: Attention, candidates!

Mountain Xpress will highlight campaign activities here in our weekly Campaign Calendar. Candidates and organizers are invited to send us notice of events, be they debates, fund-raisers, forums or other political functions. We must receive your information by noon on the Thursday preceding our next Wednesday’s publication. For now, some key dates and info:

• Oct. 9 primary election: The success of the petition to submit the question of whether Asheville’s elections will be partisan or nonpartisan affairs to a public referendum has changed the original voter-registration deadlines. Voters must register at least 25 days before the Oct. 9 primary or the Nov. 6 general election to cast a ballot in either.

• Get your training now: Poll workers are needed for the upcoming vote on the Asheville referendum (date not yet determined) and the primary and general elections. To qualify, you must be registered to vote in Buncombe County, affiliated with either the Democratic or Republican party, of good reputation, able to read and write and “friendly and professional.” For more information, call the Board of Elections at 250-4200, the Buncombe Democratic Party at 274-4482, or the Buncombe Republican Party at 253-5800.

• Unaffiliated candidates and pending referendum: The deadline for filing as an unaffiliated candidate for Asheville City Council and the date for voting on the partisan/nonpartisan referendum still have to be decided. Watch our Web site (www.mountainx.com) for updates on both these decisions, and see our story elsewhere in today’s paper regarding the results of the referendum petition and announcing early unaffiliated candidacies.

It only takes a moment.

Before you comment

The comments section is here to provide a platform for civil dialogue on the issues we face together as a local community. Xpress is committed to offering this platform for all voices, but when the tone of the discussion gets nasty or strays off topic, we believe many people choose not to participate. Xpress editors are determined to moderate comments to ensure a constructive interchange is maintained. All comments judged not to be in keeping with the spirit of civil discourse will be removed and repeat violators will be banned. See here for our terms of service. Thank you for being part of this effort to promote respectful discussion.
