It’s not too late! Residents who are qualified to vote but who missed the 25-day deadline for voter registration may still register and vote at a One-Stop Voting site during the One-Stop Absentee Voting period, which started Oct. 18 and ends Nov. 3. To vote early in the one-stop process, you need to appear in person at the Board of Elections (189 College St. in Asheville), complete an absentee application and then cast your ballot.
Voter information available on local television: The Asheville City Council candidates forum sponsored by the League of Women Voters and the Leadership Asheville forum on Asheville’s partisan/nonpartisan referendum are being shown on URTV, the local public-access channel 20, at various times Nov. 3 to 5. Oct. 25: Black Mountain Aldermen and Mayor Candidates Forum, 7 to 9 p.m. at the Black Mountain Center for the Arts, sponsored by Black Mountain News and League of Women Voters.
Oct. 31: The Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce hosts its 2007 Candidates Forum with the Asheville City Council candidates, sponsored by Manpower. The event, which takes place at 4 p.m. at the Chamber, is free for members; there is a $10 fee for nonmembers. For information, call 258-6122.
Nov. 1: Politics West Asheville Style, hosted by the Westville Pub to promote increased voter turnout in West Asheville. All candidates for City Council are invited to meet with the voters, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. (with rumors of special appearances and the addition of the Brother Fatback band at 9:30).
Nov. 3: One-stop voting ends at 1 p.m.
Nov. 3: Bicyclists Advocate Freeborn and Newman—a gathering from 4 to 6 p.m. at the downtown Asheville Pizza and Brewing Company on Coxe Avenue. Meet the candidates and see the city’s Comprehensive Bicycle Plan on display.
Nov. 5: Absentee ballots must be received by your board of elections (via mail, commercial courier service or in person) by 5 p.m.
Nov. 6: General election for municipalities throughout Buncombe County, and partisan/nonpartisan election referendum for the city of Asheville.
