Downtown Man strikes: He would identify himself only as “Downtown Man” when Xpress spotted him on Sunday morning, Sept. 6, in the process of removing trash from of an overflowing street receptacle on Wall Street and putting it into two of his own large trash bags.

“I saw the can was full on Saturday morning,” he said, “even though the city is supposed to empty the downtown cans on Friday.”

Downtown Man explained that, with all the expected Labor Day-weekend visitors coming to town, trash would soon be falling or blowing out of the can onto the street. He said he had decided to transfer the trash to two plastic bags, which he deposited on the sidewalk next to the metal can.

The garbage truck must not have made it to Wall Street on Friday, he speculated, noting that it was not scheduled to return until Tuesday, after Labor Day.

In a post-Labor Day follow-up, Xpress contacted Downtown Man, who reported the following: “The funny thing is that when the garbage truck did come by to pick up the trash on Tuesday, it left the two bags behind. I guess the guy thought it was someone’s personal trash, and Wednesday is personal-garbage day.”
