Asheville High students protest the war

About 30 Asheville High School students skipped class today to protest the U.S. invasion of Iraq — part of a national day of student action against the war. Students carried signs and chanted while marching from the school to Pritchard Park and along sidewalks through downtown.

Signs reading “Honk for Peace” and “Honk if you hate war” drew some blasts from passing motorists. Asheville Police Department school-resource officers were on hand but didn’t interfere with the protest.

  1. I used to skip school to protest war all the time.

But seriously, we’ve all seen this episode of The Wonder Years, it’s a dumb idea.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m against the war, but what did this stand to gain other than a bunch of kids missing Algebra class? Nothing. I would understand if there was a draft or something that the kids were rebelling against. But I think that it’s more likely that they were just enjoying a nice spring day.

  2. Thanks for the post. It’s always good to read about peaceful vigils especially involving our area students. People the world over were in the streets this week with hopes of advancing peace. Nice photo.
