Noam Chomsky comes to Asheville (virtually, that is)

Linguist and social critic Noam Chomsky will visit Asheville, albeit virtually, Monday, March 19, from 6 to 9 p.m. and Friday, March 23, from 3 to 6 p.m. The twin events, sponsored by the Asheville Global Report, Mountain Area Information Network, Socialist Unity League, UNCA, Veterans for Peace, WNC Peace Coalition and WPVM-LP 103.5 FM, will take place in UNCA’s Rhoades/Robinson Room.

The Monday event includes a screening of Noam Chomsky: Rebel Without a Pause, followed by breakout sessions during which participants will frame questions to be asked during a live video conference with Chomsky on Friday.

In addition to his significant contributions to linguistics, Chomsky is regarded as one of the leading leftist intellectuals in the world and has published more than three dozen books and hundreds of articles during his career. Recently his work received a major sales boost when Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez held his book aloft during a speech at the United Nations.

Both events are free and open to the public, though seating for the main room for the second event will be limited to invitees who have attended the first. There will be a video feed to another room for overflow attendees.

  1. “Both events are free and open to the public, though seating for the second event will be limited to invitees who have attended the first.”

Doesn’t that sort of imply that the second event isn’t open to everyone?

  2. Kasha

Writing to clarify the Chomsky Events as the organizer. Our showing of “Noam Chomsky: Rebel Withou a Pause” is tonight in room 125 Rhoades/Robinson at UNCA (bldg. next to the construction tall crane) at 6PM, we wil break out to detemine who will get to ask the questions and sit in the video rooms (that is limited) on Friday. This will be done by a fair drawing from a seating tonight of 180.
BUT there is an overflow room to which the live feed will be sent on Friday and that is HUMANITIES LECTURE HALL behind and up the hill on the right of the Library. This is at @ 3: pm for the
3:30 live conference. We will again breakout to debrief & begin planning next steps for our long term goal–> an extensive “Peace, Sustainable Living & The Politics Of Truth Festival” prior to the 08 election.
Spread the word and Pray however you do that, for Professor Carol Chomsky, (Noam’s wife) who is ill. Go Well Kasha

  3. Which would you say is more dangerous to Mrs. Chomsky, being ill, or being caught between her husband and a camera.

Man I love that old joke.
