Dropping dime on erosion outlaws

Asheville’s Stormwater Services is now offering after hours on-call services, allowing residents to report sediment and erosion violations caused by new development.

In a program that began Dec. 1, the city provides the service from 5 p.m. to 8:30 a.m. weekdays, and 24 hours a day on weekends and holidays, for emergency sediment and erosion violations. According to the city, on-call staff will respond to the following situations:

• Mud or sediment from a development site in a roadway, yard or basement directly related to a weather event.
• Mud or sediment from a development site in a roadway, yard or basement when the sources of the water are not known.
• Failure of an erosion-control system on a development site that has been witnessed by a citizen or passerby.

Weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Asheville residents should call 232-4567. Overnight (5 p.m. to 8:30 a.m.), weekends and holidays, the number to call is 258-4747. A staff member is obliged to respond within 30 minutes of receiving an emergency call, according to the city.

I just wish the “dime dropped”brought high enough fines to deter these modern day robber-baron developers…most of whom are funded by out-of-state land rapists.
