Great Smokies Writing Program (GSWP)
The Great Smokies Writing Program welcomes writers of all levels to engage in a supportive learning community through 5-week, 10-week, and 15-week long courses. This fall, professional writers will lead university-level classes in flash fiction, memoir and personal essay, writing for children and young adults, poetry, sci-fi, and more. Courses will be taught online and begin with a range of starting dates from September to mid-October.
Registration is now open, with course descriptions, instructor bios, cost information, and more available at greatsmokies.unca.edu.
College for Seniors at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI)
Fall 2021 classes will return to in-person learning for older adults looking to expand their knowledge in an impressive variety of subjects. The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI), which will celebrate its 10th anniversary in connection with UNC Asheville next year, offers non-credit courses with no assignments, tests, or grades to adults over age 50. The upcoming semester will offer 65 in-person courses as well as eight online courses.
OLLI shifted all course offerings to an online format during the pandemic, and despite challenges, excelled in adapting their hands-on learning approach into mentally-stimulating virtual classes. Attendees benefited from the consistent local connection felt from attending classes with members of their community. OLLI online courses are not just another webinar-format teaching tool; instead, courses boast a real-class feel where ideas from students are exchanged, and discussion is encouraged.
OLLI members collaborate with staff to teach, learn, and design curricula, and arrange special events. In addition to the annual OLLI membership fee, a tuition fee for each term is paid by College For Seniors participants, with some partial scholarships available.
The College for Seniors fall term begins September 2021, and registration opens on August 10. To see course descriptions, cost information, and more, visit olliasheville.com/college-seniors.
