Seen and not herd
Sid the Sloth from this summer's Ice Age 3 made his off-screen debut as a tiny figurine in McDonald's Happy Meals; now he's appearing, for a much chillier price, on seasonal hoodies. And more than three years after he zoomed out of theaters, Lightning McQueen, the star of Pixar's Cars, is still flashing his winning […]

The elevator at Chimney Rock State Park is closed for maintenance, but visitors can still reach the top of 315-foot Chimney Rock by taking the Outcroppings Trail from the upper parking lot to the top in about a half mile. Rates will be reduced to $9 for adults and $5 for youth (ages 6-15).
Cranky Hanke’s Screening Room: Favorite horror movie deaths for Halloween
It’s become a tradition that Justin Souther and I undertake some kind of Halloween treat for this column. Well, it’s a treat for us, no matter what anyone else thinks about it. This year we opted to go to perhaps the very core of the horror film—death.

Ferocity, urgency, timing
"I certainly thought that would be it for the band," Ahleuchatistas frontman Shane Perlowin says matter of factly. He's referring to the loss of drummer and founding member Sean Dail last year, weeks before the band was scheduled to leave for tour. Ironically, as he talks about the band's near demise, Perlowin is preparing to […]

2009 Asheville general election voter guide
In a typical election season, the Xpress voter guide would simply feature the six Council and two mayoral candidates that are on the ballot for the Asheville general election. But things are more complicated this year. Three days after the primary's 7,113 ballots were cast, fourth-place finisher Kelly Miller bowed out of the race. Since […]
The Green Scene
Hamming it up for plastic Did you know that every second, 100 plastic bottles are thrown away in North Carolina? And that one in five plastic bottles doesn't get recycled? Those are just two reasons state legislators passed a bill that bans plastic bottles from landfills. The law took affect on Oct. 1, and during […]
A little bit country, a little bit rock n’roll (web only)
The Osmonds were on to something with "A Little Bit Country, A Little Bit Rock N' Roll." And cheesy as they may be, that sentiment pretty well covers the lineup at the Grey Eagle Saturday. Brooklyn's Andy Friedman and the Golden Winners share the stage with Asheville's raucous Brian McGee and the Hollow Speed and […]
Cranky Hanke’s Weekly Reeler Oct . 21-27: Torture, an aviatrix, guitarists and paranormal stuff
OK, here’s one of those weeks where we’re actually getting some things that people have been asking me about. And once again, I encourage you to get out there and support these movies. It’s in everyone’s best interest to help support quality—or potentially quality—film in Asheville.

Cranky Hanke’s Screening Room: Seven movies, five days, culture shock
As those of you who read these columns reguarly know, I was in Florida last week—in large part to bring a long-lost (well, sort of) friend who hadn’t seen a new movie since probably the early 1990s into the 21st century of films. I discussed the choices—and potential choices—a column back, so it seems only reasonable to bring everyone up to date and how the experiment went.
Book Report: Going Away Shoes (and other local book events)
Short story author Jill McCorkle reads at Malaprop’s, plus book launches and a publishing expo.
This weekend on a shoestring
Yes, this is still the weekend on a shoestring, but a not-to-be-missed free event popped up on a Wednesday. So get your party on early and set the tone for the next several days worth of fun and inexpensive events (including a free MySpace Secret Show with Baroness, pictured here, on Friday).
Progressives ascendent in Asheville primaries
On Oct. 6, Asheville voters, or at least some of them, narrowed the field of candidates to six council and two mayoral hopefuls who will advance to the general election on Nov. 3. Vote-count leaders Cecil Bothwell, Gordon Smith and Esther Manheimer quickly called the primary results a victory for newcomers over incumbents. Three days […]
You make it, they air it
There are a few key points you learn at URTV 101, the free weekly orientation to Asheville's public-access station. No. 1: URTV is not paid for with taxpayer money. No. 2: The channel is set up as a First Amendment-flexing, free-speech forum. No. 3: There's only one thing you won't see on the channel: Commercials. […]
