Animals can make us healthier, say local experts
TJ Amos says that after a childhood filled with unspeakable abuse, she decided on a career as a psychotherapist so she could help others overcome the type of trauma she had experienced. Then she met the “perfect partner,” and they began planning a life together. But before it had barely begun, her fiancé was killed in the […]

Horse power: Using draft animals in the 21st century
While tractors and mechanized farm equipment have now largely replaced draft animals, a small but passionate contingent of farmers in Western North Carolina continues to rely on them to help with the daily work around their farms and as a source of extra income at times.
Letter writer: Celebrate Mother’s Day with kindness to animal mothers, too
“This Mother’s Day, let’s reflect on the largest population of mothers in our country: the many billions of female cows, chickens, pigs and other animals on our farms. How do they rank as moms?”

Giving voice to the voiceless: Animal advocacy in WNC
The piercing glare of a red-shouldered hawk; the regal trot of a burnished stallion; the silent grace of a moonlit wolf; the reassuring purr of a well-loved tabby; the furry muzzle of a family dog. Animals console us; they dazzle us and, in some cases, they love us unconditionally. But however impressive their prowess — […]
U.S. Forest Service tracks wildlife responses to fire restoration in Pisgah National Forest
It was my first prescribed burn. After weeks of training, and months of anticipation, I was finally on the ground – drip torch in hand – ready to apply fire to restore the mixed pine-hardwood forests at the edge of the Blue Ridge Mountains, on the Grandfather Ranger District of Pisgah National Forest.
WNC farm found in violation of improper animal waste disposal
On Tuesday, Aug. 12, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals released a statement, video and photo gallery (link below) claiming a Western North Carolina dairy farm mistreats its animals. The video showed cows on the farm knee-deep in their own manure, trudging through the sludge while feeding, sleeping and before milking. PETA reported many of […]

VIDEO: Nibbles predicts 6 more weeks of winter for Asheville
To the chagrin of those hoping for an early spring, Nibbles, Asheville’s very own clairvoyant groundhog, predicts six more weeks of winter weather. Or at least that was the interpretation of WLOS Chief Meteorologist Jason Boyer, who “translated” the adorable rodent’s Feb. 2 forecast at the WNC Nature Center during a Groundhog Day celebration attended by hundreds of onlookers.

Fewer than 100 red wolves are left
Thank you for posting the Nov. 16 Blogwire, “Reward Offered for Information Related to Fourth Red Wolf Death.” (See http://avl.mx/nh.) I fail to see the wisdom of continuing the night hunting of coyotes using spotlights that the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission has allowed since August. Since then, four protected red wolves have been shot. […]
Stop hunting the red wolf
One was one too many! Now four radio-collared, endangered red wolves have been killed and still the nighttime hunting with spotlights in the red wolf habitat goes on. (See http://avl.mx/nh.) Why are these folks allowed to ignore the Endangered Species Act and continue killing? The red wolf recovery area/habitat should be free of hunting anything […]
The time for action is now
I am outraged that yet another endangered red wolf is dead. (See http://avl.mx/nh.) Not only is there no valid reason for the coyote hunt, but many of us tried to tell Executive Director Gordon Myers and the N.C. Wildlife Commission that the hunt put red wolves in danger. In a night hunt, it is next […]
