Sculptor Ron Kane, from apprenticeships to “Gates of Paradise”
Ron Kane worked as a carpenter on more than 38 movie sets and for four years apprenticed to Egyptian King Faruq’s sculptor Mustaf Naguib, but his career came to a sudden halt when he injured his spine on the set of Road to Perdition. Kane has since settled in a Candler-based warehouse-turned-living space where he crafts wooden artwork for customers. He has also created The Next Step for Humanity — the first of a 50-sculpture series called “Gates of Paradise” — and practices a low-key lifestyle he discovered through Sufism.
Expect a big turnout at CleanUp Candler April 9 community meeting
Can a community initiative rise from the ground up, with no leaders and no set agenda? The answer is yes, and it’s apparent in newly affixed “Ole Town Candler” bumper stickers and a CleanUp Candler campaign that’s taking off via a Facebook page. And on Thursday, April 9, the initiative takes another step forward with a community meeting at Enka Middle School.
Wicked Weed breaks ground on new 50,000-barrel production facility
On March 18, Wicked Weed brews flowed from taps set up in a Candler parking lot — the future home to the local brewery’s new, 40,000-square-foot production facility. The groundbreaking celebration began at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, with an afterparty at the Funkatorium, home to Wicked Weed’s barrel-aged sour beers.
Mission Health to open new comprehensive care practice, first of many
There are no signs up outside of the two-story building yet, but Senior Vice President of Government and Community Relations for Mission Health Rowena Buffet Timms says there’s no question about it: Mission Health will bring a new family care facility to the Enka/Candler area within the coming months. Named Mission My Care Plus, the 11,000-square-foot facility features 15 patient exam rooms, two medical procedure suites, a full pharmacy, an X-ray machine and a physical therapy suite.
