Stabbing at Mike’s Side Pocket, “no current danger to the public”
A stabbing at Mike’s Side Pocket has left part of Haywood Road closed down as police investigate. The Asheville Police Department claims it’s too early to release details, but that “there’s no current danger to the public.” While an observer on the scene says at least one person is dead, and a source says that another died in the emergency room, these are not yet confirmed. Witnesses question APD’s account of Montford crash
In the aftermath of a vehicle collision yesterday, March 27, that left four injured and led to the arrest of a suspected drug dealer in the Montford neighborhood, several witnesses assert that police chased the suspect as he sped away, creating a dangerous situation. The APD states that officers chose not to pursue.
Buncombe County Sheriff looking for older white male in Enka RBC Bank robbery
Five bank robberies have occurred in Asheville and the surrounding area since Feb. 8, WLOS TV reports. The most recent occurred Friday morning, Feb. 24, at the Candler branch of RBC Centura. The Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office is looking for a white male in his 40s, pictured here.

Xpress investigating e-mails containing allegations about Ron Moore
Xpress has received several e-mails forwarded by hacker and writer Barrett Brown, purportedly from a local resident alleging Buncombe County District Attorney Ron Moore’s connection with drug trafficking, a claim Brown has also made. Xpress is investigating the e-mails, which appear to be from a local resident or someone familiar with the area, based on their content.
Law enforcement seeks help in finding Nantahala rape suspect
The U.S. Forest Service, Macon County Sheriff’s Office and the State Bureau of Investigation are seeking the public’s help in finding the perpetrator of a Sept. 25 rape that occurred in the Nantahala National Forest. The agencies have released a sketch of the suspect, who is considered armed and dangerous.

Unmet needs: Center for New Beginnings helps those touched by trauma, crime
When Lori Gerber moved to Asheville five years ago, she saw a need that was going unmet: Although there are services here for victims of domestic violence and rape, there’s very little for those who’ve been traumatized by other violent crimes or natural disasters. With 25 years’ experience helping others in those situations — such as helping emergency responders in New York City after 9/11 — she co-founded the Center for New Beginnings with husband Steve Gerber. On Sept. 6, the organization will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony and fundraiser at its new offices in downtown Asheville to call attention to the group’s work.
More than 100 West Asheville residents meet to discuss ways to reduce neighborhood crime
More than 100 West Asheville residents crowded into a meeting hall on one of the hotter evenings of the year to hear reports from the Asheville Police Department and to talk to neighbors about what many felt has bee a rash of crimes in area, including several home invasions. The Asheville Police Department provided information about crime in general in the city, updates on ongoing investigations and tips for staying safe.

July 28: The Asheville Police Department released details late last night, including suspect descriptions, for six recent home invasions, four of them in the West Asheville area, some of which may be related. Local artist Stephen Lange sent Xpress a note that a work in progress, a “2-foot by 6-foot diptych, brown stained wood towards the periphery with 8 red zigzag sunrays/lightning bolts in the center,” was taken from the area outside of his Wedge-building studio in the River Arts District. Four city HR staff arrested, charged in fraud investigation **Updated 2 p.m.***
The Asheville Police Department issued a release this morning announcing the first charges in the alleged fraud by several employees of the city of Asheville Human Resources Department. These include the director and assistant director of the department, who the city has no announced “are no longer employed.”
