Student overcomes troubled childhood to inspire others

Not only is Stella Galyean the first person in her family to earn more than a sixth-grade education but she did it despite a troubled childhood and an abusive marriage early on. Now a student at A-B Tech Community College, Galyean has been named the winner of the Dallas Herring Achievement Award, which only goes to one student from among 58 community colleges in North Carolina each year.
